Pet Age Calculator โ€” How Old Is Your Pet in Human Years?

The old "7 years per human year" rule is often a myth. Use our science-based calculator to find your pet's true age.

Quick Answer

The old "multiply by 7" rule is wrong. A 2-year-old dog is roughly 42 in human years, and aging slows after that. Select your pet's species below for an accurate calculator.

Why the "7 Human Years" Rule Is Wrong

The idea that one pet year equals seven human years is a myth. Animals don't age at a constant rate โ€” they mature rapidly in their first 1-2 years and then aging slows down. A 1-year-old dog is sexually mature and behaviorally equivalent to a teenager, not a 7-year-old child.

Researchers at UC San Diego developed an epigenetic clock based on DNA methylation patterns that shows dogs age much faster early in life. A 2-year-old dog is roughly equivalent to a 42-year-old human, not a 14-year-old. After that, aging slows to about 4-5 human years per dog year.

The modern formula for dogs: 16 ร— ln(dog age) + 31 = human equivalent. For cats and other species, the conversion varies further โ€” select your pet's species above for an accurate chart.

What Affects How Fast Your Pet Ages?

Size & breed

Smaller dogs live 12-16 years while giant breeds average 7-10. Size is the single biggest predictor of canine lifespan.

Diet & weight

Overweight pets age faster. Studies show calorie-restricted dogs live 1.8 years longer on average than overfed siblings.

Spay/neuter status

Fixed pets tend to live 1-3 years longer due to reduced cancer risk and fewer roaming-related injuries.

Dental health

Periodontal disease introduces bacteria into the bloodstream, stressing the heart, liver, and kidneys โ€” accelerating aging.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the "7 years per human year" rule accurate?โ–ผ
No, the "7 years per human year" rule is a myth. Pets age much faster in their first 1-2 years, then aging slows down. For example, a 1-year-old dog is equivalent to about 15 human years, not 7. Our calculators use science-based formulas developed by researchers at UC San Diego and other institutions.
Do different breeds age at different rates?โ–ผ
Yes, especially for dogs. Smaller breeds tend to live longer (12-16 years) while giant breeds average 7-10 years. Size is the single biggest predictor of canine lifespan. Our breed-specific age calculators account for these differences.
What factors affect how fast my pet ages?โ–ผ
Key factors include size/breed, diet and weight (overweight pets age faster), spay/neuter status (fixed pets live 1-3 years longer), and dental health (periodontal disease accelerates aging). Genetics and quality of veterinary care also play significant roles.
How do I calculate my pet's age in human years?โ–ผ
Select your pet's species above to access our age calculator. Enter your pet's age and breed (if applicable), and we'll provide an accurate human-year equivalent based on the latest scientific research. The formula varies by species and breed size.
