Scoop Method
Scoop your hedgehog from underneath with both hands. Never grab from above. Let them sit in your cupped hands until they uncurl.
Belly Rubs
Once they trust you, many hedgehogs love belly rubs. A hedgehog that shows its belly is fully tamed and comfortable.
Bonding Pouch
Use a fleece bonding pouch and carry your hedgehog against your body while watching TV or working. Constant scent exposure speeds taming.
Treat Training
Offer mealworms from your fingers. This builds a strong positive association with your hands and scent.

This is completely normal, especially for new hedgehogs. They are prey animals whose primary defense is curling up. With daily handling over 2-4 weeks, most hedgehogs will uncurl faster and eventually stop balling up entirely when they recognize you.
Can hedgehogs learn tricks?▼
Not really. Hedgehogs are not trick-learners like rats or ferrets. The "training" goal is taming: getting them comfortable with handling, relaxing in your presence, and recognizing you as safe. Some hedgehogs will come to a sound associated with mealworms.
