Guide de Nutrition Chinchilla 2026

Chinchillas are herbivores with extremely sensitive digestive systems. Their diet should be almost entirely hay-based, similar to rabbits. Dietary changes, high sugar, or high fat can cause fatal bloating and GI stasis. Simple and consistent is the key to chinchilla nutrition.

Aperçu des Besoins Nutritionnels

Chinchillas have very long digestive tracts designed for processing high-fiber, low-nutrient food. They are hindgut fermenters like rabbits and produce cecotropes (nutrient-rich droppings they re-eat). Their digestion is extremely sensitive — sudden diet changes, sugar, fat, or excess moisture in food can cause fatal bloating.

Nutriments Essentiels

Fibres
The most critical nutrient. Chinchillas need 30%+ fiber for healthy gut motility and to wear down ever-growing teeth.
Meilleures Sources : Timothy hay, orchard grass, botanical hay
Protéines
Needed in moderate amounts (16-20%) for maintenance.
Meilleures Sources : Timothy-based pellets, hay
Calcium
Important for bone and teeth health, but excess causes bladder stones.
Meilleures Sources : Timothy hay (not alfalfa — too high in calcium for adults)

🚫 Aliments à Éviter

Fruits
Too much sugar for chinchilla digestion. Even small amounts can cause fatal bloating.
Nuts & Seeds
Far too high in fat. Chinchillas cannot process fats and develop liver disease.
Fresh Vegetables
The moisture content causes dangerous bloating and diarrhea in chinchillas.
Gouttes de yaourt
Commonly sold but extremely harmful. Dairy and sugar are both dangerous for chinchillas.
Dried Corn
Causes fatal bloating and is a choking hazard.

💡Conseils d'Alimentation Pro

Provide unlimited Timothy hay 24/7 — this should be 80-90% of the diet

Offer 1-2 tablespoons of plain Timothy-based pellets daily (no added treats/colors)

The ONLY safe treats are dried rosehips, a single plain cheerio, or a tiny piece of dried herb

Never offer fresh fruits, vegetables, or moist foods — the water content causes bloating

Use a hay rack to keep hay clean and accessible

Always transition food brands very slowly over 2+ weeks

Questions Fréquemment Posées

Why can't chinchillas eat fruits and vegetables?
Chinchillas evolved in the dry Andes mountains eating tough grasses. Their gut bacteria are adapted for high-fiber, low-moisture food. Fresh fruits and vegetables introduce too much sugar and water, disrupting gut flora and causing potentially fatal bloating within hours.
What treats are safe for chinchillas?
Very few. Dried rosehips (1 per day), a single plain oat, or a tiny piece of dried herb (chamomile, dandelion) are the safest options. Avoid all commercial chinchilla treats — most contain sugar, seeds, and dried fruit that are harmful.
Is alfalfa hay okay for chinchillas?
Only for growing chinchillas under 6 months. Adult chinchillas should eat Timothy hay exclusively — alfalfa is too high in calcium and protein for adults and can cause bladder stones.
